STOP the embarrassment - discover the root of your IBS

IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome pops its nasty head up once more. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, on this edition of the LCHF Podcast. Dr Jeff Gerber not only gives you advice on how the LCHF diet could benefit your IBS; but also what general options you can look at for eliminating your IBS troubles.


Welcome to this edition of the LCHF podcast, I’m Brad Brown, it’s good to be with you. Thank you so much for joining us, Dr Gerber in Colorado with us. Dr Jeff Gerber, welcome back, nice to catch up and we’ve got a question in from Annalie today. She says she’s suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

She says she’s tried so many different medications, but nothing seems to work. She says she’s always feeling bloated, she’s crampy, she’s windy and she says, quite frankly, it’s getting embarrassing. She’s getting desperate and she wants to know, will following a LCHF diet assist with her IBS?

Jerry Gerber: That’s a great question. The default answer is that eliminating sugars and grains from the diet will almost invariably have a positive effect on any gastro intestinal symptoms. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is really just a throw away generic term that a lot of doctors use for gastro intestinal symptoms that they can’t find a root cause.

How to try get a better diagnosis for your IBS

So it would be important to actually look for other causes, the gastroenterologist can help. But often functional conditions such as a leaky gut or what we call SIBO, which is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, these are kind of functional diagnosis that are slowly making it into the mainstream. So it’s important to look at those things.

Definitely sugars and the grains, the wheat are especially inflammatory to the little openings in the intestine that kind of separate us from the food which is the outside world from the inside world. So if that permeability is destroyed in some manner, then that can lead to all kinds of both symptoms in the gut and in the rest of the body. Again, you also have to consider specific food sensitivities and elimination diet can sometimes also be helpful. I hope that does answer your question.
