There are rare cases of people actually putting on weight on the LCHF diet. Chelsea is one such dieter battling a slight weight gain on the diet; what is the reason for this? On this edition of the LCHF Podcast, Dr Jeff Gerber pin points what could be causing weight gain issues on the diet.

Welcome onto yet another edition of the Low Carb, Healthy Fat podcast, I’m Brad Brown, with me Dr Jeff Gerber who is in Denver in Colorado. Doc, an interesting question, you’re known as Denver’s diet doctor, got a question in here from Chelsea and she was saying she’s a bit concerned because she’s been following the LCHF diet for a few weeks now and she says she’s put on.

She’s gained about 5kg, which is about 11-12 pounds. She wants to know what is she doing wrong? I know it’s quite a broad question, but in your experience, have you seen people put on weight when they first go on this diet?

Putting on weight? Take a good hard look at your application

Jeff Gerber: My first thought is that something is not right, something is amiss and we would like to know more about Chelsea’s metabolism. I’d like to look at her lipid profile, measure insulin, see peptide, which are markers of insulin resistance, hyper insulin anaemia, maybe even have her do a glucose tolerance test, just to get an idea of what’s going on with metabolism, as a first line.

The second line is to look more carefully at exactly what’s going on with the diet. Are we consuming 70% of the calories from fat, are we keeping our carbohydrates under 40-50g a day, are there foods sneaking in? Is Chelsea consuming artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes which can sometimes drive appetite and hunger? How many calories is Chelsea eating? So those are all big questions I have. I want to take a look at it and see if we can come up with an explanation why Chelsea is gaining weight.

Underlying medical problem affecting your LCHF weight loss?

It could be other medical problems, maybe there’s a problem with fluid. Generally on a low carb diet, even without worrying about salt intake, you tend to lose a lot of salt. The funny thing is that we tell patients to watch their sodium intake when they say they have high blood pressure, but what we understand now is the problem isn’t sodium, the problem is carbohydrate.

So if we’re concerned about blood pressure, for instance, we tell people to watch carbohydrate intake and usually you lose salt and water, but Chelsea may have some other problems that may be causing fluid retention. If she was my patient, I’d have a lot of questions and we would want to check some of the metabolic markers and hopefully come up with some answers.

BB: It’s a tough one. Doc, thank you so much for that and Chelsea, good luck, if you want to send us more info, please do, just head over to the website, lchfpodcast.com, we’d love to hear from you again and possibly delve a bit deeper.

Cause I think it is a question we do funnily enough get fairly often with people really struggling, not necessarily just to lose weight, but find that they are putting weight on here on the LCHF diet. So from myself, Brad Brown, and Dr Jeff Gerber, until next time, take care.
